In Japan, donburi is almost anything served atop a bowl of rice. While living in Japan, my favorite was unagi donburi, known in Japan as unadon. Fillets of grilled or broiled freshwater eel are place on the rice and drenched with a sweet and savory sauce before being garnished with sesame seeds. At Musashi, here in my desert valley, they called it Unagi Donburi on their menu, and they served it in a lacquered wooden box, which they often do in Japan as well. The eel is soft and moist, and fatty on the underside, and together with the sauce it is delectable. The sauce also bleeds into the rice, and that becomes delectable as well. My meal started with a bowl of miso soup and a bottle of Asahi dry beer that is now made in Italy.
